The best rhododendron trek of India

Trekking in Uttarakhand, has so far, been synonymous with trekking in Garhwal. But Ranthan Kharak reveals the hidden magic of Kumaon. The trek weaves through quaint villages, and vast clearings and leads you to ridges offering incredible mountain views.

However, the main surprise waits in the forests ahead of Namik. This is where you start seeing rhododendrons. If you are trekking in April, at the peak of the blooming season, the sheer abundance and diversity of flowers blow your mind. From bushes and shrubs to tall, stout Rhodo trees– you see them all. Reds and pinks and whites– they are everywhere.

Encountering Rhodos on a Himalayan trek is not rare in our country. If you time it right, you get to trek amidst these flowers on many treks like Deoriatal Chandrashila, Sandakphu, and Goecha La. At Indiahikes, we have trekked amidst blooming rhododendrons countless times. Yet, nothing matches up to what we experienced at Ranthan.

Pritish Bhanushali, our in-house cinematographer, visited Ranthan Kharak in May. Around this month, the first wave of flowers begins to wilt. Trails transform into a carpet of fallen flowers. But, at Ranthan, the trees continue to hold an abundance of vibrant, blooming rhododendrons.
“It was past the peak blooming season and flowers had begun to wilt. Still, I saw more rhodos on this trek than what I had seen in the peak blooming seasons at Deoriatal Chandrashila”
, is what Pritish had to say about his experience.

If that is not all, Ranthan Kharak is the only trek where you get to see the Rhodos even in September.

With brilliant forest sections, stream crossing, charming kharaks (clearings,) and meadow walks, Ranthan Kharak is full of highlights. “The trek even has an excellent climb to a high point — Ranthan Top — which is as good a summit climb as Kedarkantha. It has an extensive ridge walk, like the Phulara Ridge”, says Suhas Saya, who explored both Ranthan Kharak and Phulara Ridge.

Ranthan Top is also an incredible amphitheater of big mountains. To the West, you see the legendary peaks of Garhwal like Nanda Devi, Maiktoli, Mrigthuni, Dang Thyal, and Trisul. On the Eastern horizon, Kumaon’s most iconic peak– Panchachuli– greets you with its five magnificent summits.

But despite all this variety, the blooming flowers stand out for us. Witnessing the rhododendrons at Ranthan is simply an incomparable experience. It is not without reason that we call Ranthan the “best rhododendron trek of India”.

Who can do this trek?
With all that it offers, Ranthan Kharak is a moderate trek. It climbs to an altitude of 12,887 feet over a distance of 38 km that you cover in five days. The final push to Ranthan Top can be a test of endurance. However, there are no tricky or technical sections on this trek. While prior trekking experience shall definitely help, fit beginners can safely attempt the Ranthan Kharak Trek.

1. Clearings on the Ranthan Kharak Trek

There are many treks where you get clearings in the forest areas. And then you have you Kharaks as the locals call these clearings on this trek. These clearings are huge compared to other treks in Uttarakhand!

It is like two or three undulating football fields together and surrounded by forest sections. These clearings or Kharaks are massive.

The clearings in the forest section are so pretty that the camping experience itself is something that you can go for.

2. Combination of Ridges and Ledges

The Ranthan Kharak trek has a unique amalgamation of trekking on the ridges and ledges. Once you cross the clearings, you enter into a series of climbs involving these two geographical features. This goes on for multiple hours.

These ledges take the climb into gateways of multiple tops ranging from Thal Tok, Chophu Top and then finally to Ranthan Kharak.

If you follow the trail from the ridge and take the trail, you will end up at Nanda Kund which makes this extended trek a moderate-difficult one.

3. Forests on the Ranthan Kharak

The forests of Ranthan Kharak are another highlight that makes your knees go weak. The forest is a mix of oak trees, maple, and pine. A majority of sections are also covered with different types of rhododendron trees.

Trekking during the months of Spring, Summer or Autumn is a delight for any trekker who has a special corner for forest sections.

4. Birdlife on the secluded trails

The final highlight which adds a cherry on the cake is the birdlife you witness on the delightful trails throughout the trek. Along with the sounds of these beautiful chirping birds, you also get to see colourful birds swooping across the forests or at the clearings.

When the exploration team came back from the trek, they had the excitement to share about this trek giving a very close competition to our Deoriatal Chandrashila Trek, which is another trek known for birdlife.
